Share Our Spare™ was founded in June 2011 by 10 Chicago women with a desire to help mothers less fortunate than themselves. While the births of our children resulted in an overwhelming accumulation of gear for our little ones, we know that many families struggle to provide their children with even the most basic essentials. Recognizing that we had more “stuff” for our children than necessary – and knowing that so many mothers in our community were going without – we were inspired to create this organization.

We currently serve low-income families with one or more children (ages 0-4) living in metropolitan Chicago. We reach these families through partner organizations, located on the north, south and west sides of the city as well as downtown.


What need are you fulfilling?
Nearly ½ of all children living in greater Chicago live below the federal poverty level. Sadly, parents are faced with heartbreaking decisions such as reusing diapers and going without food. Chicago offers an unparalleled network of social service agencies to support these families in education and training, job placement, housing and food. However, no organization provides reliable cost-free essentials for the early years like diapers, clothing and gear.

What is Share Our Spare’s™ mission?
Our mission is to provide Chicago families living in low-income and homeless situations with the essentials they need to thrive. We impact the health of our communities by connecting those with items to share with those in need.

What is your business model?
Through meaningful board, volunteer and donor experiences we collect new and gently-used baby and children’s items from individuals and corporations and distribute age-appropriate kits and supplies through a network of social service agencies.

Share Our Spare™ is making a difference in the lives of thousands of children each year. We have longstanding relationships with over 20 organizations serving families in need. While we provide essentials that help children remain safe, comfortable and healthy, our partners provide other valuable services to the families we serve like housing, job training, employment and parenting education. Our partner agencies appreciate the value we provide, allowing them to direct resources to the services they provide.

Additionally, Share Our Spare™ is entirely volunteer-run. We rely on generous donors to cover our very lean operating expenses.

From Downtown 90/94 Exit at Augusta / Milwaukee: Turn left at the light onto Milwaukee. Follow to Chicago Ave. Turn left onto Chicago. Cross light at Ogden and turn left at Sangamon. Continue on to the end of Sangamon, and turn right onto Chestnut.

From the North 90/94 Exit at Ogden: Turn left on Ogden and follow it to the end. Turn right onto Chestnut. Head through stop sign at Sangamon. LakeShore Academy is on the right.

From Chicago & Halsted: Head West on Chicago from Halsted. Turn right onto Sangamon. Follow to the end of Sangamon, and turn right onto Chestnut.

From Chicago & Milwaukee: Head East on Chicago to Sangamon. Turn left on Sangamon. Follow to the end of Sangamon, and turn right onto Chestnut.
